When he took time to help the man up the mountain, lo, he scaled it himself.
– Tibetan Proverb
This proverb sums up very well the Hiba approach to sport/PE. We believe the development of skills in sport
educates the ‘whole’ child and is available to all. These skills equip our pupils for their future roles in our global
society. As our pupils physically develop and mature, their sport related skills development grows alongside them. These
skills, dexterity, eye-hand coordination, spatial awareness etc., supports their learning in all subject areas and
in their daily lives. The proverb also speaks of our values – working for the common good and of course personal
success. It highlights our desire for our children to develop and be equipped with relevant personal skills: teamwork,
perseverance, resilience and so on.
As stated, our teaching philosophy is based on sport for all and our sports staff will ensure children
experience a wide range of sports during the year, giving them the opportunity to discover new talents and perhaps a new
sport that excites as they learn many new skills. In line with our bilingual focus, the sports curriculum fully covers
the Shanghai requirements and is enhanced with elements from the English national curriculum. Sport and PE is delivered
in English. The curriculum is designed so children develop skills in line with their physical and mental ability. Skills
start at a basic level and are revisited, developed and refined as the child grows. At Hiba, all children will have
sports/PE lessons every week. During each semester children will undertake swimming lessons, engage in team sports,
enjoy dance, movement and gym work all as part of our curriculum.
Our school has great sporting facilities including our own 25 metre swimming pool, all weather running track, basketball
court and field/pitch space. Indoors, we have dance studios and an indoor movement/PE space. Phase two of our exciting
development will see the provision of a senior school full sports hall. We have brand new sports equipment covering many
sports, ensuring our children have the highest quality resources to ensure their success.
At Hiba we support the ethos of competition and our sporting teams and individuals will have the opportunity to take
part in competitions against others. Our teaching staff will also be working closely with colleagues at Wellington
College International Shanghai to ensure our children haves a truly inspiring sporting experience.
In addition to our curricular sports provision, children at Hiba have access to our superb, well-established and highly
regarded Academy programme. This out of school hours programme, (including weekends and some holidays) allows children
to take part in new sports and enjoy specialist instruction. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity for the children
to be taught by Hiba staff plus outside coaches/teachers with incredible expertise and experience. The range of
activities on offer is huge, covering many sports (both team and individual), that are not always available as part of
the curriculum. Delivered in English, the Academy programme supports our bilingual ethos.
Sport and PE at Hiba is highly valued. High quality facilities, high quality teaching staff and a unique bilingual
curriculum focused on every child, will ensure all develop a love of sport, life-long skills and academic excellence.
I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
